Nasal polyps are non-cancerous masses that develop in the lining of the nasal cavities and usually originate from the ethmoid sinuses. Often they can be seen with the naked eye inside the nostrils or they may even project from them.
Why do nasal polyps occur?
They grow, swell and occupy free spaces in the nose. Nasal polyps occur due to irritation and finally the reaction of the nasal mucous membrane to an inflammatory agent. Consequently, their appearance is most frequent in conditions characterized as chronic sinusitis.
Infections, allergies or any condition that causes long-term inflammation in the nose or sinuses can increase the risk of having nasal polyps.
Conditions often linked to nasal polyps include:
- Asthma.
- Aspirin sensitivity.
- Cystic fibrosis.
- Dental infections.
- Lack of vitamin D.
- Having a family history of nasal polyps also might increase the risk.
What are the symptoms?
Usually, nasal polyps coexist with other diseases of the nose. The most common symptoms they cause are:
- Feeling “stuffy”
- Runny nose
- Postnasal discharge
- Nasal congestion
