The examination of the external ear with a microscope significantly increases the diagnostic accuracy and facilitates the monitoring of diseases of the external ear canal, eardrum and middle ear.
The microscope allows for the accurate removal of ear wax (cerumen), foreign bodies and for the performance of a small incision through the layers of the tympanic membrane in order to relieve the middle-ear of the accumulated fluid. Ventilation tubes (grommets) may also be placed to allow for better drainage of the middle-ear fluid. Furthermore, endotympanic medical therapies may also be achieved with ear microscopy.
