A sore throat (pharyngitis) is one of the main reasons for visiting the doctor, especially in winter. Pain, irritation or scratchiness of the throat that often worsens when you swallow are the main symptoms. Viruses that cause respiratory tract infections are the most common cause of pharyngitis.
Infections causing a sore throat might result in other signs and symptoms, including:
- Pain and tingling in the throat
- Pain during swallowing
- Fever
- Headache
- Swelling of the lymph nodes in the neck
- Muscle pains
- Runny nose
- Cough
- Sneezing
- Body aches
- Nausea or vomiting
Tonsils can become infected and swollen.
Children are especially vulnerable to pharyngitis. Their immune system is still immature and they are easily attacked by various microbes. Many viruses and bacteria including group A B-hemolytic streptococcus, are easily spread at school, in child care centers, and among family members. Children may present a more severe form of the disease with breathing difficulties, swallowing difficulties, severe headache, vomiting and coughing.
Viral pharyngitis, which is the most common cause, usually clears up after 10 days. Pharyngitis caused by bacteria requires antibiotics.
Some general guidelines can help pharyngitis of any cause:
- Rest: Sleep helps the body fight an infection.
- Drink plenty of fluids: Fever increases the body’s need for fluids. At the same time, these moisten the throat and pharynx, reduce stinging, make swallowing easier and remove the risk of dehydration.
- Gargle with Chamomile and Soda: Gargle with chamomile and soda (mix half a glass of warm chamomile with 1 teaspoon of baking soda) a few times a day to help soothe a sore throat.
- Diet: Broths and soups have soothing effects. Chicken soup also appears to have anti-bacterial properties.
- Foods that do not irritate the affected pharynx should be chosen such as cooked cereals, purees and yogurt.
- Irritants such as orange juice or spicy foods should be avoided.
- Air quality: There should be no cigarette smoke in the area of patients with pharyngitis due to the irritation it causes. Also the air should not be dry, as dry air can aggravate the condition even more.
