Aphthous ulcers, commonly referred to as canker sores, are the most common ulcerative lesions of the oral mucosa. These are usually painful and are associated with redness, and occasional bleeding from the affected area(s). The aims of treatment are to reduce pain and healing time.
Presentation of lesions
The lesions are characterized by single or multiple rounded, shallow, oral ulcers which cause moderate to intense pain and heal within 10-14 days.
Treatment of Aphthous Ulcers
The lesions normally heal automatically within 7-14 days so therefore treatment regimes consist of topical pain relief medication and vitamins to boost the
immune system. Corticosteroid and antiviral therapy may be prescribed.
