What is Photobiomodulation?

The application of LLLT works by inducing photobiomodulation in cells which is photochemical reactions, a process also referred to as Biostimulation.

Photobiomodulation in Cells

In photobiology, the central phenomenon is photoreception, i.e. an intracellular process in which specific biomolecules called photoreceptors, absorb photon energy. The mitochondrial respiratory chain is a classic example of a very common biochemical process involving many photoreceptors. Three of the most important photoreceptors or chromophores are cytochrome c oxidase, porphyrins, and flavoproteins.

Thus, light energy (photons) penetrates the tissue where it interacts with chromophores located in cells resulting in photophysical and photochemical changes that lead to alterations at the molecular, cellular and tissue levels of the body.

Biostimulation of cells results in:

  • Repairs cell DNA
  • Activates mitochondria
  • Collagen production increases
  • Increases cell membrane stability
  • Increases capillary permeability
  • Has an antioxidant effect
  • It improves the immune system
  • Suppresses inflammation at all levels
  • It induces wound healing
