A migraine is known to be a severe headache, but there is a form of migraine in which patients experience repeated attacks of dizziness and other vestibular symptoms without a headache. This form of the disease is called vestibular migraine or migrainous vertigo.

The basic mechanism by which you experience the space around you and control your balance begins with sensory receptors in the vestibular system and then ends up and is interpreted by the brain. When these receptors do not function properly or the brain misinterprets the signals, a person can experience vertigo, unsteadiness, or dizziness.

The majority of these patients with vestibular symptoms usually have a history of migraine with or without aura. However, 3 in 10 people experience migraine vertigo without a prior history of migraine.

Vestibular migraine is one of the most common causes of recurrent spontaneous vertigo attacks lasting from minutes to several days. Despite being a relatively common condition, as it is the second most common cause of vertigo after benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, it continues to be underdiagnosed and undertreated.

Individuals with a history of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo in childhood are at risk of developing migraine vertigo without a history of migraines. In fact, sufferers often have a lifelong history of motion sensitivity. Many experience car vertigo as children and have motion sickness as adults.

Clinical experience has shown that vestibular migraine can be a chronic problem. Some patients report vertigo most days of the month and others report a constant feeling of dizziness. However, scientific data on chronic and persistent vestibular migraine are limited.

Vestibular Migraine: Treatment

Western medical options for vestibular migraine are limited. The goal is mainly to reduce the frequency of attacks. Strategies include:

  • Reduction of triggers
  • Lifestyle changes
  • Preventive drug therapy during attacks
  • Treatment of comorbidities
  • Vestibular rehabilitation therapy

In the neuro-otology department of EYASIS, Holistic medical acupuncture treatments are applied for the effective treatment of Migraine dizziness/vertigo.
